Syrian refugees resettling in Alberta face integration challenges where social connections play a vital role. This study examined the social networks, support, and capital among Syrian refugees who arrived in Alberta in 2015-2016, comparing experiences across large and small communities and among different sponsorship types (GARs, PSRs, BVORs). Using surveys, forums, and interviews across five cities, findings revealed that ethno-cultural communities, sponsors, and organizations are key to successful settlement. GARs tended to connect more with settlement agencies, while PSRs relied on community networks. Refugees in smaller centers reported a stronger sense of belonging but participated less in recreational or religious activities. Though most felt a sense of belonging to Canada, they continued to face challenges related to settlement needs, racism, and social exclusion.
