Overview

In the COVID-19 Pandemic Response and Impact Grant Program (Co-RIG), we conducted original data collection for two research projects focusing on the impact of the pandemic on vulnerable populations. The first project (Co-RIG QI) examined the COVID-19 outbreak at the southern Alberta Cargill meat plant, with a focus on temporary foreign workers. The second project, in partnership with the University of Calgary and Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, explored the COVID-19 vaccination experience of newcomer refugees and community-led vaccination models.

Objectives

Investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on vulnerable populations, including temporary foreign workers and newcomer refugees.
Provide actionable recommendations for academic, policy, clinical, and community audiences to improve vaccination efforts for vulnerable populations.

Approach | Strategies

Collaborated with primary care networks, non-profits, patient advisors, and community leaders representing the ethnic distribution of the Cargill plant.
Conducted iterative data collection alongside advisors and community leaders to address issues of mistrust with health systems.
Worked with diverse partners from immigrant serving agencies, migrant advocacy groups, refugee health providers, academics, and first-language interviewers to identify barriers and strategies for successful vaccinations.

Outcomes | Results

Our research projects provided actionable recommendations for improving vaccination efforts for vulnerable populations, including temporary foreign workers and newcomer refugees. We also identified unique barriers and needs, as well as successful community-led vaccination models.
